if i install a wireless security system in a rental. am i allowed to take it with me when i leave

Look at your lease.

Almost every form I know of says you can't attach anything without the landlord's ok.

And almost every form I know of says you would have to leave it in place unless the landlord says take it out when you leave.

BEST APPROACH: Get your landlord's approval up front IN WRITING with the right to dismount/remove on departure (as long as you fill any holes...you make by the mounting/installation). As a "wireless" system the landlord "should" have less of a concern.

WORST APPROACH: Install it without ok, at the end before any "move-out" inspection remove it, and hope the landlord doesn't notice it during your tenancy or any holes you make at the end.
