Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

I want out of a joint contract

Me and my ex purchased a vehicle together. Within twenty-four hours of the purchse, we informed the dealer that we no longer wanted the vehicle and tried to returned it (prior to actual financing). They told us because we signed a piece of paper, we had to purchase that vehicle or another vehicle. The problem is my ex and I can not equally own the vehicle because he wants sole ownership even though I am the main buyer on the account and he is technically the co-signer. The finance department at the dealer tried to convince us that we were co-owners. My ex believes this, has bullied the situation, and has taken full possessionof the vehicle. First, was it legal for the dealer to force us to buy even though we changed our minds within twenty-four hours? Is there a such thing as co-owners even though my ex signed as co-signer on all the legal documents? If he has taken full possession of the vehicle, is there any way I can remove my name from the contract so it doesn't reflect on my credit should he fail to pay, or worse, get me into other legal trouble should anything happen while the car is in my name?

There is no right to cancel or return an item you've purchased, except in some very specific circumstances (like refinancing your house or things bought from door to door salesmen). Once you walk out the door with it, it's yours. The title will show who owns the vehicle. Co-signers are equally liable for the debt.
