Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

How much late fee can a landlord charge?

My landlord currently charges a twenty dollar a day late fee. I feel this is extremely unreasonable. In the three years I have resided at my home, I have only been late one time ... out of the the $1000 dollars, I am short $100. I need eight more days to come up with the additional $100, by which time I would have to pay an additional $160. Can they do this legally?

only if it is agreed upon before you agreed to lease, but obviously if you do not have a written lease, then it could be made a term of your lease 30 days later just like raising the rent part of your lease contract
