How do I leave my house to my partner if something happens to me?

It is probably best accomplished by each of you having a will (which would cover your estate overall). There is a new law in Illinois allowing for a transfer on death instrument (TODI), essentially a revocable deed that takes affect only upon acceptance by the grantee after the owner's death. That, however, would be limited to the property and may leave out other things that you may want to see accomplished and should have covered with your estate. A good estate plan is well worth the expense.
When you say partner, are you speaking of your life partner, civil union partner, business partner, or what? If you are talking about your life partner or civil union partner, there are several ways, including: (a) a will or trust, (b) some written agreement (partnership, etc.), or (c) some kind of conveyance (and Illinois now allows for conveyances that become effective only on death, to mention a few. You should sit down with an attorney to help figure out what works best for you.
