Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

I live in the state of Illinois and put a security deposit down on an apartment so that the property managers would hold it, but did not sign a lease. I now realize that I can't move in because the property aggravates my allergies, but the property managers are refusing to give me back my deposit. Do they have the legal right to do so, and if so under what specific law? Thank you so much for your help.

No, they do not have to refund the deposit. Your deposit was "rent" so they would keep the apartment empty and waiting for you.
