Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

I have an ill man who has gone to live with a family member. Today some other family members indicated they want to occupy his home. I suggested to him that he have them sign a document indicatong they would be accountable for the taxes and maintenance on the home. The family members will not be charged rent or anything. The gentleman can't afford a lawyer. Would such a document be legal, holding the occupants accountable?
