Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Mortgage interest

My wife & I bought a house with my mother in law. She put the down payment but I've been making monthly mortgage payments. Last year, she moved out due to disagreemnets with my wife. I paid her rent in full. This year, when she filed her tax returns, she claimed over 75% of mortgage interest on the property. Can she do that? I can prove that I was making the monthly payments and upkeep of the property. I have not done my taxes yet untill I find out if I should claim the Mortgage interest.
