Personal Property being held

I was living with a friend of mine for about 4 months. I moved most of my belongings into a guest bedroom where I was staying. Last week I made arrangements to move into my Mom's house. When I contacted my friend about getting my personal belongings back from his house, he informed me that he was missing ninety dollars and believes I'm to blame, and also that if I didn't come up with the money, he would keep my television instead. I told him I didn't have the money, but to keep the peace between us he could keep the television until it turns up. Today, he called my fiance and informed her that he plans to keep my television set, stereo system and speakers in compensation for the missing money and that his mother wrote out a document and signed it making it alright. My question is: What can I do to get my personal belongings back? I would like to settle this without going to court.

Call the police and tell them your property is being held against your wishes. There is no automatic right to convert the property of others without authority of the proper owner to do so. If he has a problem with you and money you may owe to him, he can file a lawsuit against you if he chooses. He has no right to automatic conversion of your personal property.
