privacy rights/24 hr notice
it is my third week in my new duplex and already i see problems arising between my elderly landlord/neighbor and my family. we live in a small rural community and everyone is normally in each others business. however, my landlord feels she has the right to come over whenever she wants and ''check on the place''. is there any privacy act that prohibits her from doing so. please help. we cause no problems and i am a new doctor in the area trying to make a good name for myself. any confrentation that may be avoided would be a plus. WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS?

Your rights are defined in your lease agreement and any applicable ordinance or statute. Check your lease carefully. If it is a standard form lease, the landlord must give you reasonable notice prior to entry, except in cases of emergency. Also, many local municipalities have enacted landlord-tenant ordinances. Check with your city or village hall for such ordinancies, or contact the village attorney and ask him or her (you can obtain his or her name from the village hall). Finally, you can contact the IL attorney general's office for direction to review state landlord-tenant statutes. Also, these statutes are undoubtedly available online through Findlaw.com or other services.
