Property damage

A 17 year old was drunk driving crashed into a 30+ year old tree on my property, snapping the top off the pine tree. He was charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding a police officer, operating an uninsures motor vehicle and failure to signal when required. I feel this person should pay for the damage. Where do I start?

You have three options off the top of my head. 1) Contact the prosecutor and see if restitution can be imposed as part of any sentence. 2) File suit against the driver or 3) there may be some sort of insurance claim that you can make under your homeowners policy.
