Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois
I rent an apartment. Earlier this summer, I experienced a bout of mental illness and did an extremely poor job of keeping the apartment clean, in violation of the terms of my lease. It got to the point that other residents began complaining of an odor. The building manager, of course, received the complaints and told me to fix the problem or else I might be evicted. Thankfully, I cleaned the apartment thoroughly and am on good terms with the building again. However, I'd like to know if the building still has the right to evict me if they choose to, given that I was (but am no longer) violating the lease.

Normally for violations of this kind, the landlord is supposed to give you a special kind of notice, and if you "cure" the problems within the time period given, everything should be ok and no, they can't evict, but it is always nice for them to issue a note saying "you're good" and cancel the notice, because your lease (if you have one) may say something different can happen. Luckily, being a Chicago apartment lease (hopefully 3+ units not owner occupied) you have some good protections. Best of luck.
