Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois
I rent in Chicago and my lease ends Aug 31. Is it legal for a landlord to say "Please accept this letter as notice to show the apt beginning july 15 until July 20. " or does he have to give me 48 hour notice to what time each day he'll be showing?

Technically if your unit is covered by the RLTO, 48 hours notice is required for each such entry, but if the landlord is saying you should expect showings throughout the period, or if you are uncertain whether that is the landlord's intent, you should talk first to your landlord and get clarification, and then decide on how strictly you want to have the landlord adhere to the ordinance. While privacy and security are top issues, nothing prohibits you from negotiating this (times of day, etc.), because any interested party should also be aware, or made aware, that any showing may require 48 hours prior notice. Put another way, if the landlord violates the ordinance, you will have to decide whether you want to go to court to have your RLTO lease enforced strictly. That could be a bigger pain.
