what does it mean when a rental lease says, "Rent shall be considered received, if mailed, on the date of receipt"

That means that assuming rent is due on the 1st of the month, simply mailing it on the 1st isn't good enough, and the landlord's actual receipt of the rent is the day it arrives in the mail at his mailing address.
