Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois
We rented a home in Charleston Il, we found out things concerning the home after we moved in. One of the things that were never disclosed to us, is it was a meth house, now this past Friday we were robbed. We have been in the home a short 3 months, robbed, are having breathing issues, bloody noses, etc. I have two young children and am very concerned about their health. We don't know if it someone that the neighbors knew or the past tenants that robbed us. My children and I are all scared to stay in this house but don't know if we have any legal rights to get out of the leases? Please help????

You should take your lease to an attorney, and you should contact the local building department about the health issues. You may have to declare a "constructive eviction" which is a process of telling the landlord you can't live in the place given the situation and it is uninhabitable, but you may first have to make a demand on the landlord to repair the place under the Illinois Residential Tenants Right to Repair Act. But don't do any of these things without an attorney's help because you want to put together a strong case for yourselves just the landlord gets funny and tries to either sue you if you stop paying rent and/or if you move out.
