If you have a signed lease you may be ok or the victim of fraud. If you have no signed lease you may still be ok if you have proof of payment plus some evidence of the kind of tenancy that you intended to create OR you may still be the victim of fraud. And for all you know it is a scam between the two claiming to be able to rent the place to you. The good thing is that you are already in occupancy, and whoever came by would have to follow the legal process to evict you, which would include being served with an appropriate notice (usually 30-day in cases like this) plus an eviction lawsuit. Time to hire an attorney to protect yourself, get to the bottom of things and, if it turns out the person you rented from was a scam artist, you may have an action for fraud against him.
