Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

I am currently renting a townhouse. On April 2nd a man came to the house and told me that my landlord was being foreclosed and that the bank now owns the house. He told me to stop paying rent immediately and posted a notice on the front door. I was given 90 days notice to vacate, which coincidentally is when my lease is up.

My landlord claims that she is doing a short-sale and that she will keep the house for another year. I received another notice in the mail last week similar to the one the man posted on the front door.

Do I need to keep paying rent?

What did the notice say? If the bank owns the townhouse, then the bank got title through a mortgage foreclosure lawsuit. You would have to move. The landlord may have been trying to get a buyer under a short sale, but ran out of time under the lawsuit or could not find a buyer.

You should talk with an experienced real estate attorney to fully understand your rights and the facts. This reply is a general answer and a public service, and does not create an attorney client relationship.

Hard to say without seeing the actual document. You should immediately consult with an experienced real estate lawyer.

Someone is not giving you accurate information. I would suggest contacting an attorney to review the documents and possibly the foreclosure file.
