selling abandoned personal property

a friend of mine had a tenant that left owing back rent and left 2 snowmobiles and a trailer in the garage that went with the rental property. the landlord is wanting to sell these items and get them off their property.

what steps need to be followed in order to sell these items so that everyone is in compliance with the law?
