Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois
my son looked at an apartment he put down a deposit on it got a reciept but didnt sign anything. The next day my son decided not to take the apartment and called the landlord and asked for the deposit money back. The landlord refuses to give it to him. Can he legally do that? What should we do? The amount is 375.00

Was there a lease? Was a check or money order exchanged? I hope your son didn't pay in cash. If a check was paid you can always call the bank and try to put a stop on the check. The landlord should not be allowed to keep the money taken like this.
