Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Former tenant's property that was left behind

A tenant, whose lease expired last September, left behind many things. The tenant owed many months rent, much more than the security deposit. The tenant has not been or will be back to get the things. Can I just throw out the things, or do I need to go thru an eviction process? Thanks for your answer.
