Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois
Can the terms on a lease be changed?
I just recently moved into a new apartment, and met my landlords at their residence to sign a lease. I noticed that there was a term on the lease that I did not agree with. It was written in pen across the top, and stated ''the tenant is responsible for applainces (e.g. stove, refrigerator.) I explained to her that I did not want to sign the lease under these terms if the other tenants did not have to. She explained to me that it was something that she just started adding, and that she was going to revise the other tenants leases as well. My question is can she revise their lease after they already signed it?, and what if they do not agree to it?

Re: Can the terms on a lease be changed?
The landlord CAN NOT require the current tenants to amend their leases. She can require it at renewal time. If the tenants, at that time do not agree to the terms they can move out. You are not in that position. If the lease is not yet signed and he/she wishes to impose this provision on you he/she can, but again you do not have to agree and if you do not agree then the landlord has the right not to lease the property to you.
