Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois
Verbal Agreement on Grass Hay
My uncle had 35 acres of land that hasn't been touched in over 20 years. We have a few horses and asked our uncle if we can get a farmer to mow and bail that field for some hay. He told us that we can take all the hay we want, not a problem. After the second cutting of the grass he now sent us a certified letter stating that he wants compensated for $1890.
$20 times 72 round bales - $1440
Till and reseed storage area of 1600 sq ft - $240
Removal and disposal of spilt diesel fuel - $210 (never happened)
Letter states interest of 1.5% per month will be added to the total if not payed in 30 days.
What should we do?

Re: Verbal Agreement on Grass Hay
For one thing, I would suggest removing him from your Christmas card list. Seriously, give him a call, and see what he is thinking. If that does not go well, perhaps you could send him a bill. From your question, it appears that you paid for the cutting and baling of the hay. If $20 per bale is the going rate for round bales (I have no idea about that), I would think it would make sense that you should be able to deduct the cost of baling the hay from the amount he claims he owes you.
While you would not think it necessary when dealing with family, the old adage, "Get it in writing" sometimes applies more to family transactions than when dealing with strangers.
