Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in Illinois
Racial harassment by manager
My husband works in a restaurant. There was beer missing from the cooler and was told to his face by a manager that ''all mexicans steal beer'' (he is Hispanic) alos, this same manager verbally abuses almost everyone there when she is having a bad day, using swear words that cause disruption in the workplace. I cannot find any laws pertaining to this situation, it is not sexual harassment, it is verbal and racial. There is only 2 mexicans and 1 African American working in the restaurant. There was an altercation Friday and my husband did not start it, she did, and it escalated during the day dragging him into it. She was in a bad mood due to another employee quittingthat day(who is Hispanic also). I believe she is racist and these actions have put a strain on our relationship in our home. What are steps we can take and who do we contact? The owner said to my husband today that a lawsuit may be happening in a few days, what can we do? He would not expand on details of the ''lawsuit'' and by whom. Thank you.

Re: Racial harassment by manager
Federal law prohibits racial discrimination in the workplace. If your husband's employer can be shown to treat Hispanic employees differently from non-Hispanics, then you may have a case. Please consider consulting with an attorney to discuss all of the events at work that you believe are improper.
