Legal Question in Tax Law in Illinois

My daughter and her friends want to start a school club that does fundraising for local charities, they also will collect money to make necessity bags for the homeless. They won a $2000 grant for their idea. How do we set them up to protect again tax liability and also other forms or liability?

They should set up a not-for-profit (NFP) organization, probably a NFP corporation. However, even directors of a NFP corporation do have some legal duties, although they are largely protected from liability by Illinois law if they follow the rules. They can read more at the website of the Illinois Attorney General at http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/charities/volunteers.html
