What Expenses Can I Deduct?
I'm travelling to Africa in February under the auspices of a recognized nonprofit to help build a school. I've already bought my plane ticket and started immunization shots. And I've had to pay for lodging in advance. Are those expenses deductible?

Re: What Expenses Can I Deduct?
Any expenses related to business travel are deductible if they are directly related to the trip. However, if there are any side trips planned for vacation or personal enjoyment, the IRS will reduce the allowable deductions.
The better you keep track of expenses and receipts, the better you will be able to justify the expense to the IRS if need be. Also, be sure to write down the names and titles of all business contacts you make and get verification from your business/company of your trip plans, being on behalf of the company rather than something that you planned yourself, etc.
You will want to review all items that you plan to deduct with your tax preparer. He/she can give you advice based on all of the facts.
