denial of a public defender

Why would a 21 year old man charged

with transporting open alcohol and

contributing to the delinquency of a

minor be denied a public defender at his

court date? The court date was also

moved up a month.

He would be denied a public defender if he had a job so he could pay a lawyer, or posted bail so it could be signed over to the lawyer at the end of the case. Perhaps this 21 year old had access to money in a trust, or has parents who could afford a lawyer. Public defenders are for the truly indigent (very poor), not for people who don't want to pay a lawyer. I once heard Judge Earl Strayhorn that he rather an accused's family bear the burden of his legal fees than the taxpayers of Cook County. (Insert any county in there) That's how it should be.
