Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois

drag racing ticket-what should i do?

I just got in an accident after drag racing with a friend. Im 17. I've never gotten a ticket, my record is clean of everything. WHen i go to court im going to plead guilty. Will I get my liscence suspended? or will i get probation? If i bring a lawyer, then will I surely get probation? Or should i not bother with a lawyer and will i still get probation? I live in niles, illinois. thanks.

Re: drag racing ticket-what should i do?

A drag racing ticket can result in a license suspension if there is a conviction. There are many outcomes short of a conviction that can protect your driving privileges. A possible outcome is one of court supervision, which is not a conviction on your record, and allows the judge a variety of options, including community service or traffic safety school. Depending upon the circumstances, you may even plead not guilty, because the statute prohibiting drag racing is specific, and review with an attorney regarding the facts of the case may reveal that you did not in fact violate that statute. I would counsel against a blind plea of not guilty. You should have representation.

What you should do is not to compoud your mistake by NOT hiring a lawyer. Pleading guilty can have dire consequences that you never dreamed of.
