Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois
hit a parked car, need a laywer?
Hello -
Over the weekend, I rear-ended a parked car on a Chicago street. Nobody was in the parked car and I was not injured. Damage was done to both cars and a claim has been filed with my insurance company. I received a ticket for ''failure to remain in my lane'' which requires me to appear in court. Do you suggest that I hire a lawyer to appear in court with me or can I plead guilty to the traffic citation and pay the associated fines? Please advise.
Thank you

Re: hit a parked car, need a laywer?
The short answer is to hire a lawyer. And NOT plead guilty. There are many competing interests here, not the least of which is that YOUR insurance company may get very cute with you if you plead guilty by taking the position that you did not cooperate with them, violated the policy, etc. You should specifically call them and ask if they would provide an attorney for you at traffic court pursuant to the terms and provisions of the auto liability policy. Some policies have a provision that says that they will provide a lawyer to you at no charge. GOOD LUCK!!
