Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois

Hello,

I received a ticket out of town for not having proof of insurance in my car. I called the courthouse and asked what else I could do besides go to court (since i live 5 hours away) and they said the only thing would be to bring the papers into the courthouse before the courtdate or go to court, so either way I would have to go out of town which i didn't have the money to do. Now, they are charging me $235 dollars even though I have proof that I had insurance on the day i got pulled over. They are saying now that I could have mailed the information in, which wasn't an option they gave me in the beginning. They say the only option now is to pay $235 dollars since i have waited beyond the 30 day deadline, otherwise i can hire an attourney (which will cost more than the ticket itself) to try to get it vacated. I I refuse to pay that amount of money when I have valid insurance! What can I do?
