Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois
Retrieving Tools & Personal Belongings
My auto was towed to a storage yard. I'm unable to get the car back because of financial reason. Can I be forbidden to retrieve my things from inside the auto?

Hello -
My answer is "no". You should be
able to retrieve your belongings.
You should contact the revenue
department of your municipality or
your city council person.
Re: Retrieving Tools & Personal Belongings
You did not indicate why your car was towed. Was it illegally parked? Was it towed as a result of a traffic stop and arrest? These factors may have a bearing on your ability to retrieve personalty from the vehicle. If the vehicle was towed because apparently abandoned, e.g., I would call the yard and ask what their policy is regarding the reteival of personalty from the car. You may need to bring the vehicle title, perhaps. If the car was impounded due to an arrest, you may need to obtain a court order.
