Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois
traffic (cancelled license)
i was pulled over tonight for no headlight. reason being car wrecked, was to be put into shop but my mother went into hosp, became hospice patient and died extremely recently. it was her car. when officer ran my name, my new current name did not show up, my maiden name did not show any license at all (oh my god. ive had my license since age 16/1982) when officer ran my name before may 4 marriage, it showed as cancelled. dont i have to know my license was cancelled and what for? the only thing on my record is speeding ticket in 1994 and then a no insurance ticket in 2002 that i received court supervision for so not to be on driving record, then most recent ticket in 2006 for cracked windshield. the only other thing i have done at dmv is changing registration in 2006. question is if really cancelled or suspended for anything, what can officer do to me now? he let me go home (i was stopped 20 feet from my home) and i was told to show him proof of priveleges by end of week. can i still be arrested or written ticket? what are possible penalties in court for driving with cancelled license and does it matter that i have no idea that it was cancelled or what cancelled for?

Re: traffic (cancelled license)
Hello. The State's Attorney for your
county could bring charges on the license issue. I suggests that you contact the Illinois Secretary of State and determine the status of your driver's license. This is important. In my opinion the officer was harrassing you and there is no basis for him contacting you in a week. Either he was going to ticket you on the spot, or he should disappear and let you work it out on your own. I do not believe police officers should behave in that manner.
I will be happy to discuss this further and in more detail.
