You go to law school and you represent yourself. Or, you realize that attorneys who are at least cordial with one another can often work out favorable agreements. The fact that opposing counsels have professional or even personal relationships does not mean that they are not advocating on your behalf.
Lawyers are professionals who recognize other lawyers as professionals, colleagues, and sometimes even friends. Common training and similar experience allow attorneys to relate to each other as professionals before and after you become a client. An attorney is duty bound under the professional standards governing attorney conduct to do the best job they can for you as a client. Clients come to attorneys for protection when they feel threatened by someone else's conduct. The attorney has an important job to do in helping the client, but it's a job and it's not personal, and if you think about it, that's a good thing: the attorney can help the client find the proper perspective within which to frame the client's problem, and can be effective in serving the client by maintaining some emotional distance. If you have an attorney who isn't giving you sufficient attention to your needs as a client, discuss this with him or her.
