checking acounts
on ajoint account 1 person dies is the other party sole owner of that account or is it part of the deceased estate

Generally speaking, the other party is the sole owner. There is a procedure for the estate to argue that it wasn't the decedent's intent and it should be part of the estate, but that is a narrow exception to the rule and would require an agreement or litigation.
