There are steps that can be taken to cut-off creditor claims upon the husband's estate (including jointly held assets). It is highly recommended that your daughter speak with a probate attorney to discuss the process and to see if any benefit can be gained from opening a probate estate. Alternatives to probate exist as well, and should also be explored.
