I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.

Someone will have to start by going through her documents to determine where, and whether there are any assets that might be available for her arrangements (e.g. bank statements, proxies or other evidence of stock ownership, savings bonds). Did she own her home? Safe deposit box? Often times people hide important documents and other valuables in the backs of drawers, top shelves, etc.

This may also reveal whether she had a power of attorney, whether she was working with an attorney who may have her will, etc.

Depending on the amount and type of assets she had, her estate may have to be probated, and her sister notified (since she is next-of-kin, even though they were estranged).

Regardless, if you have the contact information for the sister, it would be prudent to discuss any plans with her first.

After sorting through her documents, it would be a good idea to have an attorney review your friend's estate situation to determine what course will need to be taken.

Good luck to you.
