Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois
I just found out that my deceased grandmother gave me a quarter ownership of her house when she passed on. Myself and 3 others have been named ownership but her eldest son and another son live in the home right now. What does that mean for me? Can I ask the others that have ownership to buy me out of the share or can i live on the land or in the house?

It is difficult to interpret the question. You are a grandchild but her sons (2 of them) are living in the property. Are they among the "3 others" you mentioned? If so, then yes, they can buy you out. Another solution is to sell the house and equally divide the proceeds. Technically, you are entitled to your 1/4 share of the fair rental value less expenses up to the date of sale but if they cooperate and sell promptly you might not want to make a big deal out of it. In my opinion there are sufficient issues raised by this question for you to pay for an hour of a lawyer's time to sort it all out. www.legacylaws.com is my website.
