Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

husband left no estate or will

My husband passed away 12-2-2006. He left no will, no estate, no money, no insurance. He was self employed & I had nothing to do with his electrical contracting business. I have been contacted by a local supply company demanding I pay his bill of $594.00. They have threatned me with collections & damage to my credit or court. I am disabled with Rheumatoid Athitis & just learned I have been accepted to recieve SS Disability - $675.00 per month. That will not pay my monthly expenses & I will have to leave my home (rented) & move in with family or try to get into public housing. I can't possibly pay $594.00. I can't afford a lawyer. Please help me.

Re: husband left no estate or will

I am sorry to hear of your loss, and of the position you are in.

First of all, unless you were involved in the business, or personally signed as a guarantor on your husband's business contracts, you are not responsible for the payment of his business debts.

Contact the county bar association where you live. They may be able to assist you in finding an attorney who will be able to help you get established with public assistance. Law schools are another good place to find free legal services.

Good luck to you.
