Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

My husband's mother passed away in Texas this past summer and based on things she told us before she passed we understood that the bulk of her estate was left to my husband but we've yet to hear anything about a will from anyone, we have no idea whether her death was even reported and we're not sure my husband's stepfather has been very honest with us. We don't live in Texas and are not sure of the best next steps to take. Advice?

Texas is a community property state. Texas is also far away from where you reside, so getting facts regarding any property issues is difficult. Your best bet is for your husband to ask his step father if mom left a will, and if so whether the original will has been deposited with the appropriate Texas government office. A copy can then be ordered even without the step father's consent. You also may be able to research public records to determine title to real estate in Texas. Only if you have a hint as to what your husband's mother's assets may have been will pursuing the issue with a Texas attorney likely be fruitful.
