Intentionally Defective Irrevocable Trust

Can the Grantor of an Intentionally Defective Irrevocable Trust make gifts from the principle of the trust?

The grantor generally does not have control over whether gifts can or should be made from an IDIT. Such control is given solely to the trustee.

However, in order to determine whether the grantor has any rights to direct a distribution from the trust, you will need to have an attorney review the document and determine what the trust provisions allow.
