Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

lawyers billing

my mother set up a trust. after she died we have not had to use the attorney who established the trust more than 3 times in the past year. however, he just recently e mailed me for the FEIN number and to remind me we need to have her taxes done by 4/15. Then I got a bill for this e mail.... does this seem correct, i would be billed for an e mail from the lawyer which was unsolicited/ Her taxes had already been done .

Re: lawyers billing

It seems that the attorney is still considering himself/herself working for you. By sending the e-mail he was making sure that you were aware that the tax return should be filed. If you are no longer in need of the attorney's services, you need to communicate it in writing.

In spite of the above, you might want to consider having an attorney available to advise you on trust matters. There are many pitfalls that could cause problems in working with the trust if you are not an experienced trustee.

Good luck to you.
