Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

If we had a living trust prepared by an attorney are we able to revise it ourselves by typing an addendum to a particular portion, initialing it, signing it as grantors and trustees and having those signatures notarized? This change would pertain to how are assets are to be divided and distributed upon our death.

Thank you, Bruce

There is no particular legal reason why you cannot do so, but whether it will cause problems down the road is anybody's guess. This is akin to asking whether you're able to repair your air conditioning unit or install drywall yourself.

I'd recommend communicating your wishes to an estate planning attorney and having the attorney prepare the documentation.

I agree with Mr. Gottlieb's answer but I disagree with his metaphores. If you mess up the drywall you can have a pro come out and fix it. But when you make a mistake in the amendment to your estate plan it is too late to fix it by the time it matters.
