my mother just recently past away. How do i become a legal executor without getting a lawyer?

Technically, you are entitled to represent yourself. But it is rediculous to even think about it. The amount of time you would have to devote to finding out what to do is enourmous. Hire a lawyer.

Depending on the size of your mother's estate, it may have to be probated (through the court). If it is worth less than $100,000, you may be able to do everything without filing a probate action.
Either way, you should meet with an attorney to ascertain your rights and obligations to the estate. It will be worth your time and effort.
