Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois
After signing a contract and starting work on an estate litigation case, my lawyer quit. He said the opposing party had interviewed him when she was looking for a lawyer and implied that created a conflict of interest (despite the fact that the opposing party never hired him). Is this really a conflict of interest or is something else going on? (note: I'm certain it's nothing I did; it's either about the opposing party or her attorneys, I believe).

That's a legitimate conflict of interest that would prompt most reasonably cautious lawyers to seek to withdraw.
Usually conflicts are discovered before the engagement commences, but outside of the timing issue, the attorney's determination that a conflict exists is a very routine kind of situation. Even if the other party did not engage the attorney, in the discussion of how legal services could be applied, confidential information most likely was exchanged giving rise to the conflict of interest.
