Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

My sister feels the need to comb through my deceased father’s bank statement to see who and how much money he loaned or gave family members. My other siblings and I think it is moot point because when he was alive it was his money to do as he wished. It is only after his death that the money becomes ours. Are we correct?

You're right, more or less. But not always. If dad gave money to one of his children as an advance on their inheritance, that's a different. Hard to prove in court though. Having gone through this with my own family, it's best to let your sister go about her task and see what kind of spreadsheet she comes up with, and figure something out. Be fair as this stuff can carry on for decades.

Good luck.
