Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

small estate affidavit

My father recently passed away and left no will. In order to clear up his final affairs I must fill out and notarize a small estate affidavit and file it with the local county clerks office to become the executor of his estate. I am not sure if there was any outstanding debt and don't want to be liable for any of the debt there may be. I live in California and my fathers last residence was in Illinois.
