You are probably referring to "per stirpes," which is a method of distributing assets to descendants. If a person references two or more others as beneficiaries (e.g. of a Will), and one of those others dies before that person (e.g. who made the Will), then if the distribution is made "per stirpes," the descendants of the predeceased individual will share the part of the gift allocated to the predeceased individual based on their degree of kinship to that predeceased individual.
