Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

My widowed mother is 87 years old and probably not far off from assisted living or a nursing home. Is there anyway to legally protect her assets from these expenses? She has a house and some investments which she placed in trust years ago. Is this any protection? Please advise.
