Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

We will start out by saying I'm in a bit of an strange situation. I was notified on May 11, 2010 that my biological father was found dead in a motel room in Wisconsin when I found out I called the Medical Examiners office to see if there was any truth to this. I explained to them I have never had a relationship with this man and now I'm supposedly legal next of kin along with another half-sister who is 6 years younger than me who had the same type of relationship and I have no money to do anything with this man. He is currently still sitting in the morgue as I have no money and do not care to pay for anything for a man who I do not even know. I received a certified letter explaining that he can not remain at the morgue and I need to make a decision for final disposition of his body and attached was a list of funeral homes, on the letter it was stated that after today 6/16/2010 that I may be charged storage fees for his body. First of all I need to know if just because I called to inquire if he passed away if that legally means I was claiming him? Is it legal for them to charge me storage fees or any other fees just because I'm a next of kin? He has no money no bank account's worked under the table no property nothing that could pay for a burial or cremation. I'm sorry I was not sure which category to put this in.

I do not know the answer to your question. However, if the body is being held in Wisconsin, you should post this question to Wisconsin attorneys.
