Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

Wills and charity

My uncle just died and left his estate to my mom, me and my sister. He had about left about $ 140,000 left in savings bonds to various charities but it was not spelled out in his will, we found envelopes left in his home with his handwriting stating '' payable to these charities upon my death''. My question is What if the charity no longer exists as these bonds were from the 1970's. Also do we have to honor his request or can we turn it over as part of the estate since it was not in the will?

Re: Wills and charity

Unless his charitable bequest is stated in the will, the bonds go to the estate (or to a beneficiary if there was one stated on the bond).
