comp check
if my check goes to my place of work and i have to pick it up it is legal for my company to open that since it has my name on the envelope c/o the company name?

Yes.
If you send confidential mail to your work place, make sure that it is marked with "personal and confidential" on the envelope and that only your name appears on it.
That is IF you MUST send personal and confidential letters to your work place.
