What is the basic purpose for giving the name and signature of the witnesses in the documents, like agreement or deed?

To witness that such agreement/deed has been actually been executed in their presence.

It is for the Identification purpose that the Witness knows the Parties.
It is for the evidence that the deed has been executed as there are Witness for the same and it is not a false document.
So, that in the case of any complication the said witnesses can also be contacted for any inquiry.
